It is unclear exactly why or why massage encourages relaxation. Some people think that massage triggers the body's parasympathetic nervous system (supporting the body's restorative processes), increased muscle tension, slowed heart rate, and appreciation of the fight or flight response.
Your circulation changes. Although the mechanism is not well understood, it is thought that massage promotes lymph flow in the body. (Lymph is a fluid circulating in the body, lymph cells help fight infections and diseases.) Massage can also increase blood flow. However, exercise actually has a greater effect in increasing circulation than massage.
And while relaxing massage can increase local circulation, systemic circulation slows down, blood pressure is lowered, body temperature is low and breathing is proven to slow down. This can explain why many people become cooler during massage.
